UN Climate Action Summit 2019
The UN Climate Action Summit 2019 took place in New York City Sept.21-Sept. 23. UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on leaders to step up to the plate on Sept. 23 with “concrete, realistic plans to enhance their nationally determined contributions by 2020, in line with reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45 per cent over the next decade, and net zero emissions by 2050.”
In addition to world leaders in attendance, activists from all over the world also made their way to the summit, including 16-year-old Swedish teen Greta Thunberg. Thunberg initially made her way to New York City by boat across the Atlantic ocean as a way to avoid leaving a carbon footprint through air travel. Thunberg gained attention when she began skipping classes on Fridays to protest climate inaction outside of Sweden, thus inspiring students across the world to do the same.
At the UN Climate Action Summit, Thunberg made an impassioned speech demanding action from world leaders regarding the climate.
