Sales Ban: The sale of mercury thermostats is prohibited.

Installation Ban: The installation of mercury thermostats is prohibited.

Disposal Ban: The disposal of mercury thermostats in solid waste is prohibited.

Mandatory Contractor Recycling: HVAC contractors and Demolition Contractors are required to recycle all mercury thermostats removed service.

Collection Program Requirements

Mandatory Wholesale Distributor Collection: HVAC wholesale distributors are prohibited from selling any thermostat unless their location(s) are acting as a collection point for waste mercury thermostats.

Mandatory Manufacturer Funded Collection and Recycle: Manufacturers that historically branded and sold mercury thermostats in New Hampshire are required to individually or collectively participate in a collection program.

 

Recycling Your Old Mercury-Containing Thermostats in New Hampshire

Bring your mercury-containing thermostat to any TRC collection location for proper disposal. HVAC contracting businesses with seven or more technicians or those serving rural communities may participate directly in the program by ordering a collection container.

For New Hampshire homeowners without a nearby collection site they can request a pre-paid shipping label by phone at 1-888-266-0550 or email TRC@thermostat-recycle.org.

Please include all address information needed to ensure delivery to the proper location. A pre-paid label will be mailed to the address within two to four weeks.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAILING MERCURY-CONTAINING THERMOSTATS

  1. Clearly print return name, address and phone number on pre-paid UPS mailing label provided by TRC.
  2. Place thermostat(s) into a zipper-lock plastic bag and insert in a box. Seal securely.
    NOTE – Thermostat must be intact, complete with cover with brand name visible. DO NOT remove and ship mercury ampoules. DO NOT ship thermostat if mercury ampoules are broken or leaking.
    TRC ONLY ACCEPTS MERCURY-CONTAINING THERMOSTATS. DO NOT SHIP ANY OTHER MERCURY CONTAINING PRODUCTS SUCH AS THERMOMETERS OR FLUORESCENT LAMPS!
  3. Place the mailing label on the package and drop off at nearest UPS location.
  4. For location of UPS drop-off or to arrange for pickup by UPS, call UPS at 1-800-PICK-UPS (800-742-5877) or visit www.ups.com/dropoff.

THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE CURRENTLY PROHIBITS SENDING MERCURY-CONTAINING THERMOSTATS IN U.S. MAIL. USE OTHER CARRIER OR CHECK WITH POSTAL SERVICE REGARDING POSTAL REGULATIONS.

Fines for Noncompliance

Each manufacturer, retailer, wholesaler, or contractor found in violation of the provisions in this section is subject to fines up to $25,000 per violation.
