Vermont
It is illegal to dispose mercury-containing thermostats in solid waste in Vermont and in accordance with Vermont law, manufacturers, through TRC, provide several no-cost mechanisms for Vermont residents to recycle all brands of end-of-use mercury-containing thermostats.
Additionally, in 2008, mercury thermostat collection legislation was passed requiring thermostat manufacturers to provide a financial incentive of $5.00 for turning in a mercury-switch thermostat for recycling. Bring your mecury-switch thermsotat to any TRC collection location in the state and recieve either an in-store credit (at retail locations) or a coupon that can be mailed in to recieve payment by check.
TRC collects mercury-switch thermostats at all heating and cooling wholesalers in Vermont, municipal hazardous waste collection sites, and many thermostat retailers. For a list of particpating locations near you please use TRC collection location search tool on this page.
