SAFETY & SHIPPING
TRC accepts all brands of mercury-switch thermostats. The continued success of TRC’s collection efforts depend on collection locations following TRC collection and shipping procedures.
Please adhere to the following guidance on storage and shipping. TRC can not accept anything but mercury thermostats in its bins. Failure to follow TRC collection and shipping procedures could result in a location’s removal from the program.
Collection Sites
TRC wants the whole thermostat. Collect and ship thermostats with the covers!
DO NOT ACCEPT LOOSE MERCURY BULBS, LIQUID (ELEMENTAL) MERCURY, OR THERMOSTATS LEAKING MERCURY.
- Recycle only mercury-switch thermostats. That means no batteries, no fluorescent lights, or any other item containing mercury. Contact your local waste management authority for information on how to dispose of these items.
- As soon as the container is full ship it to TRC. Whether it is full or not, ship it to TRC at least once a calendar year.
- If you do not have a second TRC container, use a plastic 5 gallon pail with lid to store thermostats while your container is in transit.
- Do not place warranty items in the recycling container. You will not receive warranty credit for any devices received in the containers.
Collection Container and Preparing it for Shipping
When you get your mercury thermostat recycling collection/shipping container inside you should find the following items:
- One plastic bag liner for lining the collection container.
- One wire bag twisty to seal the bag liner for shipment.
- Two tie wraps to hold the cover closed during shipment.
- One authorized return service (ARS) shipping label.
To use the recycling container follow these steps:
1. Unfold the plastic bag liner and use it to line the recycling/shipping container.
2. Keep the twist tie to seal the plastic bag liner, the tie wraps to secure the recycling/shipping container for shipment, and the ARS shipping label in a safe place until they are needed for the return shipment.
3. Container should not be in an area accessible to customers. Collection location staff should accept thermostats and place them in the container.
